Fox-Pop

Fox-Pop is a 10-minute opera for children aged 7-12 to perform. It was commissioned by Mahogany Opera as part of their highly successful Snappy Operas series. I wrote the music and libretto, developed with schoolchildren from a primary school in Essex, with some rapping and word-inspired beatboxing alongside a rhythm trio which includes a 'junk' drum kit.

Synopsis

The Cats and the Dogs are having a rap battle when the beatboxing Foxes appear. No-one can understand what they’re saying though. When Channel Paw News reports that some bacon’s been stolen and a baby’s been bitten, everyone accuses the Foxes. However, when the Dogs and Cats really listen to the Foxes, they realise that not only are they innocent but “a bit like us actually.” An opera about difference, community and acceptance.
