'who we are' was commissioned for the combined National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and is thus divided into five choirs:
1) Solo Female Voices (5-8 singers)
2) Female Voice Group (SSA)
3) Male Voice Group/Boys' Choir (1 line)
4) Choir I (SATB)
5) Choir II (in 4 parts, any voices)
It is suitable for a minimum of around 80 singers, and can go up to any number! While written for youth choir, it has also been performed by adults.
The piece was broadly written in response to the UK's refugee crisis in 2015, with sections seemingly at odds with and questioning each other then coming together as one.
'who we are' was premiered by the NYCGB at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 10 April 2016.
'who we are' was awarded a British Composer Award in 2017 for best work in the 'Amateur or Young Performers' category.
